Engcobo lies on the eastern terminus of two remarkable tourist routes. The Diverse R61 Sisulu Route spans across seven small towns and has an array of tourist attractions such as rock art paintings, nature reserves and resorts. The route also has a generous offering of destinations for hiking, mountain biking and 4x4 trails.

On the Rugged Rural Ndondo Route, scenic roads on which tourists can get a glimpse of the real Xhosa lifestyle, culture and customs can be found. The Route, as the name suggests, consists mostly of rural villages and is frequented by biker clubs year-round as breath-taking views of the lush surrounding countryside can be enjoyed. Tourists can look forward to a number of heritage sites along the route as well as rivers and dams renowned for trout fishing.

Engcobo has a cool and humid climate with average midday temperatures ranging from 18⁰C in June to 27⁰C in January. The area experiences rainfall predominantly in the summer months and occasional snow in winter. Some roads are accessible only by off-road vehicles during the rainy season.
